NCBA Bank Uganda has doubled down on its commitment to education and community development with the launch of the 2026 NCBA–Makerere Marathon, positioning the annual run as a key platform for social impact.

The event, unveiled at Makerere University, drew university leaders, corporate partners, students and media, setting the pace for what is expected to be one of Uganda’s biggest community sporting events.

Speaking at the launch, NCBA Bank Uganda Chief Executive Officer Mark Muyobo said the marathon reflects the bank’s strategy of investing in initiatives that go beyond business to transform communities.

“At NCBA, we believe in creating opportunities that change lives. Through our ‘Change The Story’ agenda, we support programmes in sustainability, sports and community development because these are critical to long-term growth,” Muyobo said.

He emphasised that the partnership with Makerere University is deliberate, given the institution’s role in shaping Uganda’s future leaders and driving innovation.

“Strong institutions like Makerere are central to national development. By supporting them, we are investing in the country’s future,” he added.

Over the years, the Makerere Marathon has evolved into more than just a race, becoming a unifying event that brings together students, alumni, corporates and the wider public in support of a common cause.

NCBA said its involvement forms part of its broader sustainability agenda, which prioritises youth empowerment, education, environmental responsibility and sports development.

The 2026 edition will feature multiple race categories, including the flagship 42.2km marathon, as well as 21km, 10km and 5km runs, catering to both professional athletes and casual participants.

Muyobo described the marathon as a powerful platform that blends fitness with purpose.

“This is not just about running. It is about contributing to a cause that supports education while promoting healthy lifestyles,” he said.

Organisers expect thousands of participants to take part in this year’s edition, further cementing the marathon’s place among Uganda’s leading sports and charity events.

Muyobo rallied Ugandans from all walks of life to sign up.

“We want everyone—students, alumni, corporates and fitness enthusiasts—to be part of this journey. Together, we can make a meaningful impact,” he said.

In July 2025, NCBA Bank Uganda committed Shs 1.45 billion over five years to support the marathon and its associated community projects.

The bank reiterated its commitment to building partnerships that deliver lasting value, while thanking Makerere University and other stakeholders for sustaining the initiative.
