Tension is mounting around former Speaker of Parliament Anita Among after government moved to withdraw a fleet of official vehicles from her residence, even as a sweeping investigation into her wealth and dealings gathers pace.
At least seven government vehicles, including police patrol units, escort cars and luxury SUVs, were on Thursday returned to Parliament from Among’s home in Nakasero in what insiders describe as a long-overdue handover.
The sudden repossession follows reported pressure from the Clerk to Parliament’s office, which had raised concern over delays in returning the vehicles for accountability, servicing and reassignment.
By law, former Speakers are required to immediately hand over all vehicles at the end of their tenure, but sources say the process in Among’s case had dragged, raising eyebrows within parliamentary circles.
But even as the official fleet was being reclaimed, security agencies were tightening the noose elsewhere.
In a dramatic operation on Wednesday, investigators swooped on Among’s residence and seized several high-end private vehicles, which were later driven under heavy security to Naguru Police headquarters for forensic examination.
Top on the list was a Rolls-Royce, alongside other luxury cars that reportedly triggered suspicion and opened the floodgates for deeper investigations.
Authorities have since widened the crackdown, seizing cash, expensive jewellery and electronic equipment believed to be linked to the former Speaker. Multiple bank accounts have also reportedly been frozen.
The probe has now spilled beyond Kampala, with investigators heading to Bukedea to hunt for more evidence tied to allegations of corruption, money laundering and illicit enrichment.
Sources say the investigation is no longer just about Among.
It is increasingly pulling in powerful figures across Parliament, government ministries, the Judiciary and even the Electoral Commission, pointing to what could become one of the most far-reaching corruption probes in recent years.
While officials maintain that the return of the government vehicles is a routine administrative step, the timing has added fuel to an already explosive situation.
With investigators widening their net and fresh details emerging by the day, all eyes are now on how far the probe will go—and who else could be caught in its path.
