The death of the 31-year-old monarch was described by the Royal Family as an “immeasurable loss” to the royal family, the people of Tooro and Uganda as a whole, as the kingdom begins preparations to mourn its longest-serving king in recent history.
In a statement issued following his death, the Royal Family appealed to the people of Tooro to remain calm, united and prayerful during the mourning period. The statement invoked traditional expressions of mourning, saying: “Omukama Atulize. Enkuba Etutire.”
As the kingdom comes to terms with the death of its monarch, attention has now turned to the succession of the Tooro throne.
The Royal Family said Omukama Oyo leaves behind a Prince who will succeed him, but the identity of the heir will be formally announced at an appropriate time in accordance with the traditions and customs of the Tooro Kingdom.
The announcement is expected to pave the way for the next stage of the kingdom’s transition, with preparations for the funeral and succession expected to be guided by Tooro customs and traditions.
The Royal Family did not immediately provide details about the circumstances surrounding the king’s death, the funeral programme or the duration of the official mourning period.
It said further communication would be issued with details on the funeral arrangements and other matters concerning the transition.
Omukama Oyo ascended the Tooro throne as a child following the death of his father, Omukama Patrick Matthew Kaboyo Olimi III.
His coronation and subsequent reign made him one of Uganda’s most recognisable traditional leaders and a prominent symbol of the Tooro Kingdom’s cultural identity.
For more than two decades, Oyo presided over the kingdom, becoming a familiar figure at cultural, national and international events and maintaining a visible presence in matters concerning the development and preservation of Tooro’s cultural heritage.
His reign also coincided with efforts by the kingdom to strengthen its institutions, promote education, preserve cultural traditions and participate in social and economic development initiatives affecting his subjects.
His death therefore leaves a significant gap within the Tooro cultural institution, while placing the kingdom at the beginning of a new chapter under a successor who is expected to be identified in accordance with established royal traditions.
The Royal Family has called upon Tooro subjects in Uganda and abroad to remain united and peaceful as the kingdom prepares to lay its monarch to rest.
The appeal comes at a time when thousands of Tooro subjects are expected to travel to the kingdom to pay their respects and participate in funeral rites.
The death is also expected to attract national attention given Oyo’s position as one of Uganda’s most prominent cultural leaders and the historical significance of the Tooro monarchy.
As the kingdom awaits further communication, the Royal Family has urged subjects to respect the traditions governing the institution and allow the established processes to guide the mourning and succession.
