Former Butambala County MP Muhammad Muwanga Kivumbi has been granted bail by Butambala Chief Magistrate’s Court after spending nearly two months on remand over charges of inciting violence and managing an unlawful society.
Grade One Magistrate Amina Wahab granted Kivumbi bail on Tuesday, ordering him to pay Shs3 million in cash bail. His sureties were ordered to execute non-cash bonds of Shs2 million each.
Kivumbi, who is also the National Unity Platform (NUP) vice-president for Buganda, was arrested in July and later charged in connection with alleged statements and activities at a public gathering in Butambala.
Prosecution alleges that on July 9, 2026, at Bugoye Village in Gombe Ward, Kivumbi and others still at large addressed a public gathering and allegedly incited members of the public to commit acts of violence against government officials and to overthrow the Government.
He is also accused of managing an unlawful society by allegedly organising, encouraging or supporting people to rise against and overthrow the Government. Kivumbi has denied the allegations.
The fresh case followed his release on bail by the International Crimes Division of the High Court in a separate terrorism-related case.
On July 9, the High Court granted Kivumbi Shs10 million cash bail, with his sureties required to execute non-cash bonds. He was, however, re-arrested the following day while travelling from Butambala to Kampala and was subsequently brought before the Butambala court on the fresh charges.
Kivumbi was subsequently remanded to Kitalya Prison as his lawyers pursued bail in the new case.
The court’s latest decision means he will continue defending himself while out of custody as proceedings in the case continue.
