Police have arrested a woman who was in the company of veteran Ugandan musician and Afrigo Band leader Moses Matovu shortly before he was allegedly attacked and killed in Kampala on Thursday morning.
Matovu, 77, reportedly sustained serious injuries to the head during the attack and lost a significant amount of blood before he was rushed to Kibuli Hospital, where he later died.
Police confirmed the incident, saying the suspected murder occurred on September 24, 2026, at Kibuli Depot in Makindye Division, Kampala District.
“We would like to provide an update on the suspected murder of Matovu Moses, a musician with Afrigo Band, which occurred today, 24 September 2026, at Kibuli Depot in Makindye Division, Kampala District,” Kawala Racheal, the Kampala Metropolitan Police public relations officer, said.
Preliminary investigations indicate that at about 5:30am, Matovu went to the residence of his girlfriend.
According to police, Matovu and the woman were leaving the residence when they were confronted by a man who is alleged to have previously been in a relationship with the same woman.
Kawala said the woman who was with Matovu was subsequently arrested and is helping police with investigations.
“Following the arrest of the female who was in the company of the deceased, preliminary information indicates that the incident may have arisen from a physical altercation. However, the exact circumstances surrounding the confrontation and subsequent death are yet to be fully established,” she said.
Police said Matovu sustained serious injuries and was rushed to Kibuli Hospital by a boda boda rider, but later succumbed to his injuries.
“The female suspect remains in police custody and is assisting detectives with the ongoing investigations. The male suspect has been positively identified and is believed to have fled the scene,” Kawala said.
Police are pursuing the male suspect to secure his arrest and establish what exactly happened before Matovu’s death. Investigators are also continuing to verify the different accounts surrounding the incident.
Kawala urged members of the public to remain calm and allow detectives to conduct their investigations without interference.
“We call upon members of the public to remain calm and allow investigators to conduct their work without interference. We assure the public that all necessary steps are being taken to apprehend the suspect and establish the facts of the matter,” she said.
