Former Third Deputy Prime Minister Gen Moses Ali is dead, Daily Star has learned. Details surrounding his death were not immediately available by press time.
Gen Ali was one of Uganda’s longest-serving political and military figures, having held several senior government positions over the years.
He served as Third Deputy Prime Minister and Deputy Leader of Government Business in Parliament from May 2011 to June 2016.
He was later appointed First Deputy Prime Minister, a position he held from June 2016 until May 2021.
Throughout this period, he remained an influential figure in Cabinet and within the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM).
Gen Ali also represented East Moyo County in Adjumani District in Parliament since 2011, maintaining a strong political base in the West Nile sub-region.
Born on April 5, 1939, in Adjumani District, Gen Ali hailed from Pakele Division. He was the son of Muhammad Ali and Veronica Porsche Ali.
He began his education at Erepi Church of Uganda, where he sat his Primary Leaving Examinations in 1957.
He later attended Church of Uganda Junior Secondary School before proceeding to Old Kampala Secondary School between 1964 and 1966 for his General Certificate of Education.
Gen Ali also undertook extensive military training, including officer cadet training, paratrooper instructors’ training in 1969, and a company commanders’ course in 1972, all in Israel.
In addition to his military background, he pursued legal studies and obtained a Bachelor of Laws degree from Makerere University, as well as a Diploma in Legal Practice from the Law Development Centre in Kampala.
In 2007, he also acquired a certificate in law from the University of Wolverhampton in the United Kingdom.
He held various qualifications from military institutions in Uganda, Israel and the United Kingdom, reflecting a long career in both public service and the armed forces.
