A Kampala businessman has been remanded to Luzira Government Prison over allegations that he shot dead his maid’s boyfriend and injured the maid in a late-night incident in Bunga, Makindye Division.

John Peter Mulwana, 41, appeared before the Makindye Chief Magistrate’s Court on Thursday facing charges of murder and attempted murder. He was not allowed to take plea, as the offences are capital in nature.

Prosecution alleges that on April 26 at about 9pm in Bunga-Kalungu, Mulwana shot and killed Kevin Atwizukire, who had allegedly visited Joan Nerima, a maid employed at his residence.

Court heard that Atwizukire had accessed Nerima’s living quarters when the residence’s gateman, Geld Tumwekwase, alerted Mulwana about the presence of an unidentified man on the property.

It is alleged that Mulwana moved to the scene and knocked on the door. When Nerima opened, she reportedly pleaded for mercy. However, Mulwana allegedly armed with a pistol opened fire, hitting her in the shoulder.

In the ensuing chaos, Atwizukire allegedly attempted to escape but was shot in the back near the gate, killing him on the spot.

Police say two spent cartridges were recovered from the scene, which they believe may help in reconstructing the sequence of events. Nerima was rushed to hospital under police escort for treatment, while the deceased’s body was taken to Mulago City Mortuary for post-mortem examination.

Mulwana was remanded until his next court appearance as investigations into the circumstances surrounding the shooting continue.
