The Makindye Magistrates Court is set to determine the bail application of former Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago, who has spent five days on remand at Luzira Prison. Lukwago is facing charges of misprision of treason following his arrest last week.

On June 15, security agencies, including the police and the Special Forces Command (SFC), raided Lukwago’s home in Wakaliga, a suburb of Kampala, leading to his arrest and detention at an undisclosed facility.

Eyewitnesses said heavily armed personnel first sealed off the perimeter of his residence before moving in and taking him into custody.

On June 17, 2026, Lukwago was transferred to Kira Division Police Station, where he was formally charged. He was held for about five hours before being driven to Makindye Magistrates Court, where he was charged with misprision of treason.

During the recording of his statement, police allowed only two individuals his lawyer, Medard Ssegona, and his wife, Nnaalongo Zawedde Lukwago to access him.

Prosecution alleges that between 2021 and 2024 in Nairobi, Kenya, Lukwago, together with others including Joel Wakayima, Frank Atukunda, Hajj Obed Kamulegeya and Dr Kizza Besigye, were aware of plans to commit treason but failed to report the matter to the relevant authorities, including a minister or a police officer in charge of a station.

Following his arraignment, Lukwago, through his lawyers led by former Busiro County East MP Medard Ssegona, applied for bail.

The defence argued that Lukwago is a lawyer of advanced age who suffers from a back-related medical condition, and asked court to grant him bail. They further requested that, in the alternative, he be provided with a cardiac bed and an orthopaedic mattress while in custody.

He was remanded to Luzira Prison until June 22, 2026, when court is expected to rule on his application.
